Moving to China will be a big adjustment for you because of the vast amounts of cultural differences.
Besides the language, there are differences in food, people, art and even restrooms!
IntlMOVE has put together some information to help you acclimate to your new life in your new country.
Making Friends in China
One of the best things about moving overseas is meeting new people.
You will be able to see how people live who have grown up in a much different culture than your own.
When you move overseas, you will have to keep an open mind and open yourself up to friendships that are very different from your relationships back home.
People in China value family very much and the relationships between family members tend to be very close.
In fact, if you have single friends they will likely still live with their parents.
Many people in China do not move out to their own homes until they are married.
Also, you may notice that your new friends in China are a little more conservative than your friends in your home country.
Respect the differences and instead of judging your new friends, try to learn about the cultural nuances that make the people of China very special and unique.
Eye Contact and Physical Contact
When you move to China with IntlMOVE, you will also notice differences in personal space.
Some expats who move to China find it difficult to deal with the amount of stares they receive.
In China, it is not considered rude to stare as it is in the United States, it is just a cultural difference.
Many times, the Chinese people are just curious about your different looks and different ways of doing things.
You will also find that people in China will stand a few inches closer to you when speaking to you than you might be accustomed to in your home country.
Do not step back, because your business associates and new friends might be offended that you are stepping back from them.
When you move to China, you will also notice that friends are very physically affectionate.
Girls and boys will hold hands while walking and sit very close to one another.
Although this is usually a sign of same-sex attraction in the United States, this is not the case in China.
Friends will hold hands with one another just to show their close friendships and platonic affection for each other.
Nightlife
In larger cities in China, you will find that bars are very similar to the bars in the United States.
In fact, you will even find that many bartenders in larger cities even speak English to accommodate the many international travelers and residents.
One thing you might want to try when you move to China with IntlMOVE is karaoke.
Karaoke is a favorite pastime of many Chinese locals.
You will find that many English songs are performed at karaoke bars, so if you do not speak Cantonese or Mandarin, you will still be able to sing some of your favorites.
Moving to China will be a rewarding experience that will open many new doors.

I remember when I made my plan for moving to China. It seems like ages ago. I had IntlMOVE ship my household goods to China and it has been a great life ever since. I started out by meeting other expats, but I started to meet some locals and really enjoyed my life in China.
